I’ve had a problem…my computer crashed and with it went all my pictures and my enthusiasm to keep writing the journal. Well I’m going to try now and regain the night and continue on… The last time I wrote we were in Guanajuato and heading west towards Tlaquepaque for a couple of nights. Tlaquepaque is known for being the “Quality Buying Capital” of Mexico. It is basically 4 long blocks of pedestrian walkway that is lined on both sides with shops selling some of the most beautiful things that Mexico has to sell AND some fine dining as well. Our B&B wasn’t too bad either. We found Casa Compos by pulling into town and walking the streets. The first place we walked into was Casa Compos and we told each other when we left that it wouldn’t be our last time there either. Our personal goal wasn’t to do any “shopping” but we really did want to see and experience the sights, tastes, and the feeling of Tlaquepaque for ourselves. Sol and I found a table set up on the sidewalk were we could enjoy a brandy while the ladies headed out. They did come back to retrieve us before we got into any trouble and couldn’t afford to pay our bar bill AND to show us the bags full of goodies they had found while away. Time got away from us and the sun had decided to set for the night so we decided to amble up the walkway to find a treat. Sol was the first to find the perfect “Treat”. It was a churro that was about twice the width of the norm. There was a reason for it to be that size because after it was twisted, dropped into the boiling oil to cook, it was painted with a delicious caramel and served piping hot…absolutely amazing. There will be another day sometime to enjoy another one of those I guarantee you. I know we couldn’t get out of town without buying something, but all and all it wasn’t too bad.
Today we’re heading for the town of Tequila. You might remember, Louise and I were there last year and took the distillery tour at Jose Cuervo. Well all we had to do was mention to Sol that we were getting close to the distillery and we were committed to stop, Sol wanted to make that tour as well. Unfortunately the distillery was under-going a remodel and they wouldn’t be able to see the distillery in action. That didn’t seem to affect Sol too much as he put his money down and seemed to froth at the mouth waiting for the tour to begin. Two hours later he emerged with a little help from Carol and was ready to continue our drive “Home” to La Penita…I’m glad I was the designated driver. All kidding aside, we did purchase a couple of liters of a special Tequila. 15 of the best distilleries combined their work and bottled this “Special Tequila” for the 200th Anniversary of their Revolution…it did taste pretty good…and it was only $250 pesos.
